‘Pipe Dream’ viral stunt video has B.C. connection

The viral video ‘Pipe Dream’, showing an Australian stuntman on a motorcycle surfing one of the ‘heaviest’ waves in the world had some skeptics thinking it was fake. But there’s one B.C. company that can attest to it being the real deal.

It took more than a dozen cameras to capture the unbelievable footage of 34-year-old Australian stuntman Robbie ‘Maddo’ Maddison’s epic ride in Tahiti — and Vancouver-based Peacemaker Filmworks was there operating the drone.

“We do stuff that is completely atypical, nothing is normal,” Ryan Ennis, Peacemaker co-owner said in an Unfiltered interview.

“There was a lot of filming going on every time the bike moved, there were boats, there was our drone in the air, there were people swimming with underwater cameras. Everything was going all the time, so trying to get all of that to happen every time the bike runs; it was quite a frenetic pace.”

But using a drone camera is only one tool in the production company’s tool box. Working in television and on high-action movies like Robocop, The Bourne Legacy, Sherlock Holmes and the Vancouver-shot Deadpool, they specialize in precision driving and operating high-speed gyro-stabilized camera equipment.

And while Maddison’s project was an exciting project to work on, it’s was a one-of-a-kind type of shoot for Peacemaker.

“I don’t think this particular thing will ever happen again,” Ennis laughed.

“It was so much work to get it to happen once and plus the way [Maddison] works he’s already on to the next thing.”

But Peacemaker won’t be hurting for work opportunities.

Ennis said they have multiple projects in the works for the next eight months and while some of them “are completely insane ideas that may not happen, [they’re] always pushing forward to the next crazy thing [they] can do.”
