BROAD COVE, N.S. – Police say a woman died Saturday afternoon after assisting in the rescue of distressed swimmers at a Nova Scotia beach.

An RCMP release says civilians responded at about 4:30 p.m. to a group of swimmers who were stranded by a riptide at a beach in Broad Cove, on the west coast of Cape Breton.

After exiting the water, one of the civilian rescuers, a 45-year-old woman from Sydney, N.S., collapsed onshore.

The other bystanders started CPR until paramedics arrived, however the woman was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
