TORONTO – Toronto police are appealing for information on six men wanted in connection to a violent aggravated assault a year ago that left a male teenager in a coma for nearly a month.

Police say the incident happened on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 around 1:30 a.m. in the York St. and Queen St. W. area.

It is reported a 17-year-old boy exited a taxi and was approached within seconds by the suspects who proceeded to punch, kick and stomp on the victim’s head.

The men then fled the scene on foot with three of them eventually jumping into a taxi at University Ave. going northbound.

Police say the victim sustained severe head trauma and remained in a coma for a month following the assault.

Since the assault, police say the youth has undergone several surgeries but his quality of life will never be the same.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“He’s currently undergoing rehabilitation and is under constant medical supervision,” said Det. Sgt. Paul Rinkoff during a press conference Friday morning.

“The youth’s family has undergone a traumatic and emotional year and know that their child will never be the same or function at the same level.”

Investigators released security footage of the suspects last year and are hoping the public can help positively identify them.

“I’m appealing to the public one more time, exactly one year later, for your assistance to identify these males,” said Det. Sgt. Rinkoff.

The suspects are described as five black men and one white man between 18 and 25.
