The City of Rossland has lowered the speed limit within the city to 30 km / hr.
In a notice posted on its website, the city says this was based on a staff recommendation in response to years of raised safety concerns.
Crews will shortly begin placing a ‘3’ over the ‘4’ on existing signs to alert drivers to the new speed limit.
City staff hopes this will contribute to a traffic calming effort in Rossland, which promotes walking and cycling.
The speed limit in school drop-off and pick-up areas will also be 15 km / hr during drop-off and pick-up times. Blocks around schools will be 20 km / hr.
Two distinct areas of Rossland, on the west end of McLeod and the Nickleplate Neighbourhood, will see new speed limits, to 20 km/hour as well due to the streets’ narrow widths.
Staff at the City of Rossland say the new 30 km / hr general speed limit will add roughly 30 seconds to a one-kilometre ride, meaning almost all residents will be able to reach a provincial highway in one to three minutes.
The RCMP will be monitoring speeds on Rossland’s streets after the new signs are posted later this month.
