EDMONTON — The feline-friendly Katz District is described as “a development fuelled by the optimism of what Edmonton can be – a destination for cats from all corners of the city, the country and the world.”

The website katzdistrict.ca was the star of the internet Thursday, being lauded as “awesome”, “hilarious” and “fantastic satire.”

The website was launched after an announcement by the Katz Group, Oilers Entertainment Group and WAM Development, revealing the Edmonton Arena District would be called “Ice District.”

Bob Nicholson, the CEO of the Oilers Entertainment Group, said the idea for Ice District originated with Oilers owner Daryl Katz.

“We took it to focus groups, stakeholders and people really started to buy in,” he said Monday.

However, not everyone is a fan of the new name. In a Global News online poll, 36 per cent of respondents said they hated it and 30 per cent said it was OK. Nineteen per cent said they loved it.

Ice District will include office space, premier residential units and retail space.

One person on Twitter said the Katz District was “much better than ice.”

The fictional feline development boasts “over 25 awe-inspiring acres, a lively public cat plaza, heart-stopping cat entertainment, prime cat towers, a luxury cat hotel, and premium cat residences.”

“Enjoy sophisticated living in the heart of the district with 360-degree panoramic views and proximity to Edmonton’s most exciting entertainment and every amenity you could wish for, like cardboard boxes, a scratching post and a laser pointer,” the website reads.

The humorous take on the downtown district got some love on Twitter:
