Hundreds of Alberta pets find homes, group extends emergency adoption blitz

CALGARY — Animal rescue shelters in Alberta have a little more vacancy after emergency adoption events over the weekend.

The Calgary Humane Society (CHS) is thanking Calgarians for their help in an adoption blitz that found homes for 179 animals – including 20 dogs, 12 birds and one tortoise.

The CHS has taken in 768 animals since June 1, and currently has 663 animals in shelters, foster homes and adoption locations.

“The combination of tough economic times, seasonal influx of cats and a recent mass seizure involving close to 20 rabbits, had put Calgary Humane Society over capacity and prompted the appeal to the public for help,” said a statement from the group on Monday.

The Edmonton Humane Society also held a special cat adoption event over the weekend. A total of 58 cats were adopted: 40 adult cats and 18 kittens.

That leaves the group with 377 cats in care, with 82 of them available for adoption.

The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) also held an emergency cat adoption event with reduced fees on adult cats over the weekend.

The AARCS adoption event was so successful, they will be extending the cat adoption rates until Friday, July 17.

“We adopted 65 cats and kittens out on Saturday,” said AARCS spokesperson Lindsey Black. “We were really pleased with the numbers so we will be extending the adoption rate.”

The society is also accepting dry and wet kitten food, gastro medical food, cat litter and financial donations to cover bills for the homeless cats currently in its care.
