Infanticide convictions upheld for Calgary mom who put babies in trash

CALGARY – Convictions of infanticide against a Calgary woman responsible for the deaths of two babies have been upheld by the court of appeal, Alberta Justice confirmed Wednesday.

Meredith Borowiec was acquitted of murder for putting two of her newborns in a dumpster in 2008 and 2009 and convicted of the lesser charges of infanticide in November 2013.

The Crown appealed, but Alberta’s top court ruled she was correctly convicted of the lesser charges of infanticide in the babies’ deaths. A trial judge found Borowiec had a disturbed mind as a result of the two births and said she wasn’t capable of making rational decisions.

Borowiec was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, but with credit for time served in custody the sentence totaled 18 months.

She was also given three years for aggravated assault after placing a third newborn in the trash in 2010. That child was found and survived.
