CALGARY – The repair, replacement and relocation of a series of aging valves along Calgary’s 14 Street N.W. starts July 7, and traffic disruptions are expected until September.
The Valve Upgrade Project plans were unveiled by the City of Calgary Water Services on Monday, which will affect four areas along the street from 16 Avenue to John Laurie Boulevard. The city said temporary water lines and water wagons (if needed) will be in place for any service disruptions to area homeowners and businesses.
The project is a result of a regular assessment of Calgary’s water infrastructure to ensure system reliability. A release from the city said valves are necessary for isolating the water line so that crews can “shut down the feeder main with minimal service disruption to customers during a water main break.”
“We’ve developed a plan to stage these valve upgrades throughout the summer months when traffic volumes are lower,” said Water Services Leader of Business Performance Tanner Fellinger. ”Full closures of 14 St. NW are not planned but commuters can expect minimal traffic disruptions (lane closures and possible detours) to allow for crews to gain access to the underground valves and work safely.”
Construction will last anywhere from one to 13 days depending on the area and scope of work required.
