CALGARY – A woman and two-month-old baby survived a crash into a ditch near Priddis, Alta. after their SUV tried to avoid hitting a deer. The 26-year-old male driver was trapped in the vehicle after it rolled, and died on scene.

EMS said emergency officials and RCMP responded to the crash at around 8:40 a.m. on Monday morning. The SUV was heading east on 178 Avenue west of Coalmine Road in the Municipal District of Foothills.

The woman and baby were taken to Foothills Hospital by EMS in stable, non-life threatening condition.

EMS said the woman crawled out of the SUV after the crash, and got the child out of the backseat.

EMS believes all three were wearing seatbelts and the baby was properly restrained in an infant car-carrier.

“The male driver had still been partially ejected during the rollover resulting in him being pinned underneath the overturned vehicle,” said EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux in a statement.
