WATCH: Talented homeless man blows away onlookers with piano skill

When Sarasota’s Arts and Cultural Alliance placed seven pianos in public spaces throughout the city, they hoped it would bring more public art and music to the Florida community.

It did just that and more.

A video that has recently gone viral—with over 2.4 million views on Facebook in two days—shows a homeless man beautifully playing the 1970s tune “Come Sail Away” by Styx.

Dylan Henry and his mother, Aurore, captured 51-year-old Donald Gould tickling the ivories on a public piano, entertaining passers-by.

“It is my passion,” Gould told NBC affiliate WFLA. “I just like to make people happy out there when I’m playing. I put my hat out there and sit it on top of the keyboard in hopes of making tips because I’m homeless.”

Gould said he has another hope – that his estranged son would find him after seeing the viral video.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A former marine who has struggled with drugs in the past, Gould told WFLA that his wife passed away in 1998 and his son was taken away from him by social services.

“Every day it’s painful,” he said. “There’s not a day that’s gone by since they took him from me that I haven’t thought about him. He turned 18 last August 24. I wish he would come and find me.”

Some say they are concerned by the amount of tips homeless people like Gould receive.

Business owner Raffaele Perna said he sees some homeless people take their earnings and spend it on substances, and return inebriated.

“They come back an hour later and they can’t even play the piano,” he said. “That’s the heartbreaking part to it.”

But Gould is overwhelmed by the amount of attention he has received from the video, and he continues to hold onto the hope that his son will find him.

“I’m still fighting off tears. It’s unbelievable. I never thought it would come to this,” he said.
