Powerful storm rips through Kamloops, Kootenays

WATCH: Wicked weather hits Kamloops

A major storm hit the Kamloops area Tuesday, leading to flooded streets and storm drains, snarled traffic and the evacuation of a local trailer park.

According to the Kamloops Fire Centre, 5,000 lightning strikes were recorded in the region overnight.

It comes a day after the Kootenays were struck by a storm that downed trees and caused some localized flooding.

Residents and crews are still cleaning up after many trees in the Nelson and Castlegar fell on power lines, causing outages that lasted into Tuesday morning. The storm also hit Nakusp and New Denver and the surrounding areas.

The weather system brought strong winds, heavy rain and thunderstorms. At one time, wind gusts were reported up to 105 km/hr.

One person was hurt after a tree fell through the roof of their home and some small fires were reported as downed Hydro lines became re-energized.

It is unclear how many new fires have been sparked by the latest lightning, but earlier in the day officials said 85 new wildfires had been started since last Thursday – 62 of those since the weekend – with 50 caused by lightning.

A freak storm also hit the Okanagan community of Willowbrook.
