Independent Jewellers appeals to move crash-prone Winnipeg store

WINNIPEG — The owners of Independent Jewellers won the first step in an appeal to rebuild their Notre Dame Avenue building Friday.

Jeremy Epp wants to rebuild his jewelry store farther back from the corner of Notre Dame and Isabel Street and put parking in front — which goes against the city’s plan for the area.

The corner where the store has stood for 75 years has been the site of several recent car crashes. In January, a crash sent a truck into the building, causing severe damage. In 2013, a 53-year-old woman was killed next to the store after a car drove onto the sidewalk.

It’s time to rebuild and with safety in mind, Epp said.

The application to move the building was originally rejected because it did not meet the city’s urban planning division’s plan for the area, which dictates parking will be behind buildings and storefronts must be on the street.

Councillors on the property and development committee voted to overturn the appeal.

The owners can now apply for permits and plan to start building next year.
