South Saskatchean River level to fall as outflow reduced at reservoir

The Water Security Agency (WSA) is advising the public of another reduction in outflow from Lake Diefenbaker starting next week. Brent McGillivray / Global News

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency (WSA) will be further reducing the outflow from Gardiner Dam starting June 30. The reduction is suppose to drop current levels on the South Saskatchewan River downstream of the dam by around 0.14 metres.

In Saskatoon, the river is expected to see a decrease of 0.05 metres while below the weir, it will fall 0.11 metres.

The reduction in daily averages of 80 to 60 cubic metres per second (m3/s) aims to maintain a certain level at the reservoir. Currently, Lake Diefenbaker is roughly 0.67 metres below the normal level for this time of year.

Mountain inflows to the lake are expected to be well below normal through to September.

Based on the current forecast, WSA does not expect the reservoir to rise much more, which would make this the sixth lowest peak elevation in the 45 years.
