WINNIPEG — Festivals are filling the city this weekend giving Winnipeggers and visiting tourists lots of options to try out.

The Red River Exhibition kicked off Friday afternoon with about 50 rides including a giant ferris wheel and water slides. The summer fair attracts more than 200,000 people each year.

“At night time the ferris wheel lights up and all of the different rides ,” said CEO of the Red River Exhibition Garth Rogerson. “One of the things that’s unique is that you can just go move around the park from stage to stage.”

A few American fans in Winnipeg for the FIFA Women’s World Cup were enjoying the entertainment and food carts with a 50% off entry discount to the exhibition from their game tickets.

Pride Festival is also underway with events scheduled at The Forks. Sunday’s parade starting at the Legislature could break a record.

Organizers are expecting an extra busy turnout with all the tourists in Winnipeg for the World Cup.

“We’ve already seen that The Forks is quite busier than they usually are this time of year, so we do expect a couple more thousand to come out this year,” said president of Pride Festival Jonathan Niemczak.

The city’s largest downtown music fetival started Thursday night with hundreds of Winnipeggers packing the exchange district for Jazz Fest.

More than a dozen live bands are performing at the CUBE all weekend in Old Market Square when performances are free. The music starts at 6 p.m. Friday and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

“You hit the site and the excitement is there, you’ve got the energy of just having all of these people together,” said executive producer of Winnipeg Jazz Festival Paul Nolin.

Those looking to escape the busy city  for a couple of days can go fishing without a license in Manitoba. Family fishing weekend is a long tradition in the province allowing everyone to fish for no cost from June 12-14.
