WINNIPEG — If you live in the southwest part of Winnipeg, be prepared for fogging trucks to roll down your street Thursday night.
The city announced the fogging program Wednesday after the hot, humid weather created the perfect conditions for mosquitoes.
Starting at 9:30 pm fogging crews will be in neighbourhoods that are both south of the Assiniboine River and west of the Red River. They will wrap up by 6:30 am Friday.
The crews will be spraying Malathion, a controversial insecticide. When fogging trucks are around be sure to close your windows and turn off your air conditioning.
The city says buffer zones will be respected and crews will not spray within 90 metres of a registered property. As of Wednesday afternoon there were 380 buffer zones registered.
Homeowners have to register every year. The city is keeping the Insect Control Branch at 1539 Waverley Street open until 8 pm on Thursday to process requests. Normally they required 72 hour turnaround however the city is trying to speed processing up in this case.
The city-wide average trap count on Thursday is 151. Click here to find out what the trap count is in your area.
