Winnipeg to fog for mosquitoes starting Thursday

WINNIPEG — The city will start battling the bugs Thursday, when fogging trucks will start rolling through Winnipeg neighbourhoods.

Officials with the insect control branch announced Wednesday afternoon that all the conditions had been met to justify spraying the insecticide Malathion in the city, to kill off adult nuisance mosquitoes.

The average number of mosquitoes found in traps city wide is 51.

The southwest area of the city will be fogged first because trap counts there are the highest. One trap near the University of Manitoba posted a count of 1,264 on Tuesday.

Officials say residents will get at least 8 hours notice of which neighbourhoods, or “insect control areas” are to be fogged. “Citizens can find out which Insect Management Area they reside in by calling 311” or by going to the city’s website, officials said in a news release Wednesday.

The whole city will get treated but as always, residents can apply for a 90 meter buffer zone around their home.
