Vancouver celebrates start of FIFA Women’s World Cup

WATCH: Vancouver fans embrace the kick off to the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Edmonton.

Drums and dancing welcomed the Beautiful Game to Vancouver Saturday afternoon. Fans on the West Coast cheered on Canada’s national women’s soccer team as they defeated China 1-0 in the opening match for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“It’s a time for celebration,” said former national team player Taryn Swiatek. “We’re celebrating the women’s game. It feels like it’s finally arrived on the world stage.”

Festivities took place at Vancouver’s FIFA Fan Zone, which city officials describe as a family-friendly area for fans to watch live broadcasts of games, as well as enjoy live music and interactive games.

Located at Larwill Park, the Fan Zone will be open on the following days during the month-long tournament: June 6, June 8, June 11, June 12, June 15, June 16, June 21, June 23, June 27, July 1, July 4, and July 5.

The Women’s World Cup kicks off at BC Place on June 8 when Cameroon meets Ecuador at 4 p.m. and Japan takes on Switzerland at 7 p.m.
