Micro-homes planned for UBC student housing

VANCOUVER – Micro-homes could help ease the demand for on-campus housing at the University of British Columbia.

The university is planning to build 145-square-foot apartments containing a sleeping area, work area, a bathroom and storage. The development would be part of the Gage South Student Residence, close to the urban core of the campus and to all the amenities at the university.

This plan is in the preliminary stages, however, and the homes would not be built until August 2019. A mock-up of a unit is expected to be built in the Student Union Building this fall so students can see and look around at what a micro-home might look like.

With such high demand for on-campus housing and more than 6,000 people on a rental wait list, it is hoped these units will provide students with a space they can afford close to school.

It is expected these micro-homes will cost between $650 to $700 a month to rent, however those numbers may change.
