Police and animal control officers had to pull a deer from a pool in a Whitby, Ont., backyard Tuesday morning.

Officials got the call shortly after 8:00 a.m. that a deer had wandered into a backyard on Fallingbrook Street. Concerned the animal would bolt onto nearby busy roadways, Durham Regional Police contained the deer in the yard while waiting for animal control officers to arrive. While the plan was to tranquilize the deer and relocate her to a wooded area, the deer was scared off and leaped over a fence.

The deer had a wet landing — falling into a neighbouring yard’s pool.

Officers hopped over the fence after the deer and were able to tranquilize the animal while she was in the pool. The deer was corralled in the shallow end of the pool with the help of a pool skimmer until the tranquilizer took effect.

The deer was then removed from the water and relocated north of the area.

“Thanks to good luck and the great team work between members of the community, Animal Control Services and Durham Regional Police, the deer was able to survive the ordeal,” said a statement from police.

On Monday officials faced an outcry after a black bear was shot and killed in a Newmarket backyard. In that circumstance police said they had no choice as Ministry of Natural Resources officials had not yet arrived with tranquilizers and the bear posed a risk to public safety.
