Police: Recent Yale grad stabs fellow student, then jumps to his death at off-campus high-rise

WATCH: A recent Yale grad is dead and another student is in the hospital after an early morning altercation between the two. Police say one stabbed the other, before jumping to his death. Matt McFarland reports.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A man who graduated from Yale University last week stabbed a fellow student at an off-campus apartment building Tuesday morning before jumping out of a ninth-floor window to his death, police said.

Authorities said the altercation happened at about 5:30 a.m. across the street from the campus.

Tyler Carlisle, who majored in philosophy and worked on Republican political campaigns, fell six stories onto a third-floor ledge of the building after stabbing 21-year-old Alexander Michaud, New Haven police said. Authorities haven’t released details on what happened before the stabbing.

Michaud was listed in stable condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Both Carlisle and Michaud, who is due to graduate in 2017, were from Manchester, New Hampshire, according to their Facebook pages. Both men also were active in The Party of the Right, a conservative group that bills itself as the “right-most” of the seven parties in the Yale Political Union debate and political organization.

Police said the two were acquaintances but did not elaborate.

Carlisle was the manager of Republican Joseph Bentivegna’s failed campaign for Congress last year. He also worked for Republican Rick Santorum’s campaign for president in 2012.

Michaud is listed as the publisher of The Yale Free Press conservative publication.

Yale issued a statement calling Tuesday’s events a tragedy.

“The university extends its deepest sympathy to the families and friends of these two members of the Yale community, and joins everyone in hoping for Alexander’s full recovery,” the statement said, adding that mental health counsellors were being made available to anyone who needs them.
