Proposed boating changes to Shuswap River

File / Global News

NORTH OKANAGAN — There could be some big changes to boating regulations on the Shuswap River.

The Regional District of North Okanagan and other stakeholders are proposing restricting the use of motors on the river.

They’re proposing limiting the size of boat motors to 10 horse power on the Lower Shuswap River from Mara Lake upstream to Baxter Bridge (trinity Valley Road).

The new bylaws would also ban motorized vessels on the Lower Shushwap River from Baxter Bridge upstream to the eastern Skookumchuck Rapids Park, and mid-Shuswap River from South Mabel Lake upstream to the Shuswap Falls.

Officials say the intent of the proposed regulations is to reduce bank erosion, reduce disturbance to salmon spawning grounds and improve opportunities for non-motorized recreation.

A number of open houses are planned for public feeback.
