Road closures for Blue Nose race weekend

WATCH ABOVE:  The 12th annual Bluenose Marathon took over most of downtown Halifax today. The start gun fired for the marathon, half marathon and 10k race this morning. The weather kept many spectators away, but as Global’s Marieke Walsh reports, the racers came from all over.

The biggest outdoor fitness event in Atlantic Canada takes place Saturday and Sunday in Halifax with the Blue Nose Marathon race weekend.

Participants are still registering for the Sunday events but organizers said they are on track to have roughly the same number of runners and walkers as last year. In 2014 close to 13,000 people ran over the two-day race weekend.

Now in its 12th year, there are five races, including the marathon, the half marathon, 10K run, 5K run, and a youth run.

Streets on both sides of the harbour will be closed on both days, including:

  • Brunswick Street between Duke Street and Sackville Street, as well as all side streets feeding into the closed section, closed 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Sackville Street between Brunswick Street and South Park Street, closed 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Cogswell Street between Gottingen Street and Brunswick Street, closed 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday.
  • Nantucket Avenue between Wyse Road and Victoria Road, closed 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday.
  • Southbound curb lane on Barrington Street between Devonshire Avenue and North Street, closed 8:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

The Macdonald Bridge will be closed to vehicles from 6:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Sunday for the longer distance events.
