Regional district investigates buying northern rail corridor

ARMSTRONG – As plans for a rail trail linking Coldstream to Kelowna push forward, there are hopes another abandoned rail corridor could also become a recreational trail.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is investigating the possibility of working with the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) and the Splatsin First Nation to buy two discontinued CP rail lines that run from Armstrong to Sicamous for some sort of transportation use.

A spokesperson for the CSRD said their board has yet to formally deal with the issue but that staff is looking at preliminary information. Tuesday Splatsin chief, Wayne Christian, said in a statement that he has no comment.

Last December, Splatsin announced they had acquired 29 acres of land along the former rail lines. At that time, the first nation was hoping to lead local authorities in working to acquire the entire corridor.

However, there are still many unanswered questions about the possibility of buying the line, including how much it would cost. There are also other hurdles. Right now the RDNO does not have the authority to help buy the line and getting that authority would take months.
