EDMONTON – A house in south Edmonton’s King Edward Park neighbourhood was destroyed by fire Wednesday night.
Fire crews were called to the home in the area of 87 Street and 77 Avenue around 8:20 p.m. The two-storey house was quickly engulfed in flames and smoke.
Helen Borowiecki lives in the area and says she was watching television with her son when she smelled smoke.
“We had the window open and I’m saying, ‘Oh, somebody’s got a fire going.’ So we go outside and we see this billowing smoke,” she explained. “All of a sudden the smoke just started to spew.
“It’s amazing how quickly the flames and smoke started to come.”
A second alarm was called when a neighbouring home began to catch on fire.
“We were able to contain that to just the one building. There’s some superficial damage to the second structure and there is some collapse of the first structure on the backside,” said District Chief Randy Shakura with Edmonton Fire Rescue.
A neighbour tells Global News three people were renting the home, and the owners are in California. Everyone was able to safely make it out of the house.
There is no word yet on the cause or a damage estimate.
