MONTREAL — Officials confirm one man is dead after being shot by a police officer in the Bonaventure metro station in Montreal at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Initial reports said the suspect had fired shots at police, but new reports say the officer suffered a knife wound. Injuries to his upper body and head are not considered life-threatening. Another police officer is being treated for shock.

Police said the incident took place near the De la Gauchetière exit.

The suspect, later identified as Farshad Mohammadi, 34, was transported to hospital, critically injured with gunshot wounds. Police have confirmed that he has died.

An eyewitness said the altercation did not occur on the platform of the Bonaventure station, but rather near the ticket booth.

Karl Nantel said he saw two police officers approach a man who appeared to be in his 50s.

One officer was clutching his night stick, the other had his gun drawn.

They ordered the man, several times, to get down on the ground, Nantel said.

Apparently, the suspect ignored them and started walking away, he added.

When the suspect began to run, Nantel said that he heard three shots. The suspect then fell to the ground. He also noticed an officer on the ground.

Nantel said it all happened very fast and it was unclear to him whether the suspect was armed.

Police immediately created a perimeter and there were only a half dozen or so witnesses nearby.

According to the Société de transport de Montreal, subway service on the Orange line have been suspended between Berri-UQÀM and Lionel-Groulx stations and a shuttle bus service will be provided.

The intersection at la Gauchetière and Cathédrale Sts. has been cordoned off.
