Still time to sign up for the Manitoba Marathon

WINNIPEG – Many Manitobans are actively training for the annual Manitoba Marathon, but if you haven’t started training or even registered, there’s still time to get up off the couch and get active.

The Manitoba Marathon has several different events — a full marathon, a half marathon, a relay, a 10 kilometre, a 2.6 kilometre super run and a children’s event called Mini Mites. They all run on Father’s Day, June 21.

Rachel Munday, executive director of the Manitoba Marathon, said registration numbers for these events are up over last year.

“I think the Manitoba Marathon is everyone’s marathon. It’s for everybody in the province of Manitoba,” said Munday. “But I think what we have that’s special is we have a something for everybody.”

Even though it might be too late to start training for the full or half marathon — Munday said getting in shape for those typically takes four months — there’s still time to train for other events.

“Yes, the full marathon is a pretty big task and definitely takes a lot of training and commitment,” she said. “It’s not something that everyone can do, but everybody can try.”

The Manitoba Marathon offers a 10-week Walk, Jog, Run online training program. It’s designed to ease participants onto the starting line of the super run, the 10K and the relay.

Something new to add to the excitement this year is each 10K participant will get a medal.

“Just crossing the finish line is such an amazing experience,” said Munday.

When people sign up for the marathon, they can expect a great day of events, Munday said.

“As soon as you arrive on race day and the music is pumping and you hear the Fubuki Daiko drummers drumming and all of the other runners are surrounding you – it’s just a really amazing experience,” she said.

All races begin and finish at the University of Manitoba. Participants pick up their race packets at the Global News Fit Expo at the University of Manitoba’s Investors Group Athletic Centre on June 19 and 20.
