CALGARY – Two homes were severely damaged by a fire in the community of Erin Woods on Wednesday.
Firefighters were originally called to a home on Erin Meadows Way S.E. around 11 p.m.
When they arrived, crews discovered the flames had already spread to the roof of a neighbouring home.
“I heard screaming outside… didn’t know really what was going on,” said neighbour Chris Lefebvre. “I poked my head out front and I could see the embers flying.”
“It was devastating. Both houses were completely engulfed.”
The home where the fire originated was occupied by Ken Chung, his wife and two kids.
They were able to make it out safely, but Chung says the fire spread quickly, ripping through his children’s room.
Chung and his wife rushed next door to warn their neighbour of the fast-moving flames.
“It was awful,” said neighbour Elizabeth Cochrane through tears. “My house was on fire and I didn’t know. I was sleeping.”
“I just got out just in time, but I lost of a couple of my pets in there.”
“I got my two dogs out but I lost my two cats.”
“My boyfriend is in Ontario right now and I’m by myself.”
Two others homes had minor damage to their exteriors.
Preliminary reports indicate that the homes did have working smoke alarms.
