Regina expands cultural horizon through proposed cultural plan

File / Global News

Regina – Regina’s proposed cultural development plan may revolutionize the city’s landscape.

City staff was on hand at the Cornwall Centre to answer questions and elicit public feedback about the plan.

The 10-year proposal is a framework of recommendations – intended to be a strategic document for the city – aiming to diversify Regina’s cultural landscape.

The plan also seeks to strengthen the city’s economy by promoting cultural industries through cross-section collaboration, business creation and product development.

However, the City of Regina’s coordinator of arts, culture and film, Jeff Erbach, said the plan isn’t without its own set of challenges.

“The most significant challenges of cultural plans are what is not in a cultural plan. People consider everything to be a part of culture, but you do have to focus a little bit,” Erabach said. “Cultural plans are very unique animals. They have their own personalities so no two cultural plans across the country are the same.”

Retaining Regina’s unique flare as a city, while culturally diversifying is another major challenge.

The city said public feedback will be important in ensuring Regina won’t lose its identity on the road to cultural expansion.

Public feedback regarding suggestions for the plan will be accepted until May 8th, 2015.
