CALGARY – A new bicycle that will allow paralyzed patients to cycle was unveiled Wednesday at the University of Calgary.
It’s a functional electrical stimulation (FES) bike and it electrically stimulates the muscles to simulate a cycling motion through skin. It can help those with spinal cord injury, stroke and multiple sclerosis, among other conditions.
The $35,000 bike will be available for public use in the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre’s THRIVE Centre thanks to grants from a number of organizations.
The bike will be made available to patients who have obtained medical clearance and have completed an assessment at a qualified centre. Two other FES bikes are located in the Foothills Medical Centre and the Spinal Cord Injury Alberta Office.
