Tapping into the water improvement project in south-east Kelowna

KELOWNA – Residents in south-east Kelowna will have an opportunity to learn more about a multi-million dollar project that will significantly improve the water quality in the area.

The water system is operated by the South East Kelowna Irrigation District.  It says the improvements are badly needed because the water doesn’t meet provincial health standards.  The two-phase project will provide well water, instead of reservoir water, to all its household customers.

Phase One work begins in 2017. It includes drilling two new wells and developing treatment facilities to improve the domestic water to about 70 per cent of the district’s 6000 residents.  Phase Two of the project begins in 2019 and covers the less populated, rural areas.

The project is about $24 million.  Most of that will be paid for by increased tolls, taxes and a new, water quality levy of $20 a month on most customer bills.
