TORONTO – The union representing Peel Region high school teachers have set a strike date for May 4 if a collective agreement is not reached with the board.

Union representative Sue Doughty-Smith, Chair of the District 19 negotiating team, said member’s patience is “now wearing thin” but they are still holding out hope for a deal.

“Our goal remains to negotiate a fair and reasonable agreement with the Board, but our members are becoming increasingly frustrated,” Doughty-Smith said in a media release.

“The Board’s complacency and indifference to our interest in renewing our collective agreements has done nothing but exacerbate those concerns.”

Education Minister Liz Sandals says she’s disappointed about the strike but says the government is committed to a bargaining process that is in line with its fiscal plan.

Central negotiations resumed Monday between Ontario high school teachers and the government after the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation announced last week it had walked away from talks.

This is the first round of negotiations since the province brought in a new bargaining system, with both local and provincial talks.
