Unpacking the Politics: Week 2 of the Mike Duffy trial

If the Mike Duffy trial were a boxing match, the first round would have gone to the defence, says Global News Ottawa correspondent Mike Le Couteur.

During the first five days of testimony, he said, Duffy’s counsel, Donald Bayne, effectively demonstrated that Senate rules are extremely loose, said Le Couteurs, who has been covering the trial since Day 1.

The tables seem to have turned, however, during the second week of testimony.

“Now we’re seeing gains and body blows being made by the Crown here.  And of course, they’re showing that no matter how loose those rules were, Mike Duffy, in their opinion, knew how to get around them,” he said.

Looking ahead, Le Couteur said they’re expecting to see Gerry Donohuue, the person who allegedly ran Duffy’s so-called slush fund.

“He should take the stand, but he won’t be here in court in Ottawa,” he said. “He is having health issues so he’ll be testifying by Skype or video link but that is where we’ll really get into the nuts and bolts of exactly how this so-called shell company or, the Crown contends, slush fund, was being run because he was the one who was cutting all the cheques.”
