WATCH: GoPro video of Toronto pet therapy dog goes viral

Nothing dispels the blues like a couple of slobbery canine kisses. And Moxie is an expert.

The six-year-old Portuguese water dog is a certified St. John Ambulance therapy dog. She spends her Thursdays comforting patients at Toronto’s The Hospital for Sick Children.

When Moxie makes her rounds, she’s welcomed by staff and patients alike who gladly comply to the “please pet me” sign on her red coat.

Therapy dogs are trained to stay calm in any situation. Moxie took extra classes to be a therapy dog for children and can even assist in alleviating stress for children learning how to read.

Moxie is the star of a video recently uploaded by the SickKids Foundation highlighting the work of the many therapy dogs in the PetSmart Paws for Hope program.

“When the children are waiting to go into surgery, it can make them feel sad and uncomfortable,” said Moxie’s owner Carolyn Robinson. “So there’s nothing better than cuddling with a cute dog.”

Shot on a GoPro strapped to her back, the video shows Moxie going from room to room as patients, their family members and hospital staff greet her with smiles. The heartwarming video garnered more than 480,000 views online since it was posted Apr. 1.

“Dogs are unconditional. Every single one of us has an inner child and dogs just bring it out,” Robinson said. “This dog can break down that barrier and bring out the inner child. It’s the most beautiful thing.”

After the foundation posted the video on its Facebook page, it was flooded with comments of support and fond memories from past patients who had met Moxie or her fellow therapy dogs.

Moxie also makes weekly visits to retirees at the Bradgate Arms Retirement Residence. Otherwise she’s just like any other dog, Robinson said – bad habits and all.

“She still steals a banana muffin off the counter every now and again.”
