No safety equipment worn in fatal fall near Vernon

VERNON – RCMP say a teenager, who fell to his death while rock climbing near Vernon this weekend, was not wearing any safety equipment. The 18-year-old man was rock climbing with friends on the King Edward Forest Service Road Saturday evening when he lost his balance and fell about 12 metres.  Emergency crews rushed to help but the young man died on scene.

Early indications suggest he suffered severe head injuries, which likely contributed to to his death.

Police say the young victim has family in Vernon but also has an address in the Lower Mainland. His name has not been released.  The B.C. Coroner’s Service is investigating the deadly fall and whether drugs or alcohol played a factor.
