Regina – The Ale and Lager enthusiasts of Saskatchewan (ALES) club is holding its 22nd annual ALES Home Brew Open.
The competition kicked off Monday at the Bushwakker BrewPub in Regina and has received 645 entries, including a local brewery.
Rebellion Brewing is releasing its first beer in its community tap series.
The new Belgian Saison is relatively hard to find in Saskatchewan, but for every pint and growler of the beer sold, the brewery will donate $1 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

JDRF Outreach volunteer Ted O’Brien said the support has been tremendous.
“It makes for a large community, and it allows us over the course through our organization to raise more than $1.7 billion dollars to find a cure for type 1 diabetes around the globe,” said O’Brien.
The ALES Open is one of the largest and longest running homebrew competitions in Canada.
Beers entered in this year’s competition have been sent to Regina from as far as Newfoundland, British Columbia, and Yukon.
As a result, over 1,250 bottles of beer were unpacked and categorized to prepare for judging.
Saskatchewan has one of the highest concentrations, per capita, of Beer Judge Certification Program trained judges in the country, making this one of the most respected competitions in Canada.
Judges give home brewers feedback on their brews and give advice on how to improve future batches.
Judging for the 2014 ALES Open will take place Monday through Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.
On Friday, judging will take place starting at 11 a.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m.
