Penticton senior’s ‘dying wish’ to find 12 orphaned cats new homes

PENTICTON — There’s an urgent call to find homes for a dozen orphaned cats.  The animals had been under the tender care of an elderly couple in Penticton. But recently, the pair passed away within five months of each other. Their daughter is now hoping people will step forward to adopt the animals.

“That was mom’s dying wish, I guess, is that these cats find homes and responsible homes that will take care of them,” says Carol Hagen.

Hagen explains that her parents had been feeding abandoned cats and providing them with warm shelter in their garage for the past 20 years. Her parents couldn’t turn their backs on the fury animals and that’s how they ended up with so many.

AlleyCATS Alliance, a non-profit group helping feral cats, is assisting Hagen to try to quickly find new homes for all twelve cats because time is running out.

“The house is for sale and people are coming to look at it,” says president of AlleyCATS December van den Berg. “We can’t have 12 cats in the garage when you’re showing a house, so it’s an urgent case now.”

The cats are mostly skittish around people, so AlleyCATS is looking for people in the Okanagan with barns to adopt the animals. It’s hoping to find people who can take two or more cats together, since most have bonded with one another.

There are a few who aren’t as nervous around people and would make suitable house pets.

AlleyCATs is accepting adoption application until Friday. It hopes to find homes within the next two to three weeks.
