Help give Kelowna a “20 Minute Makeover”

KELOWNA – Part of Kelowna is getting a makeover thanks to some volunteers who are taking to the streets to clean-up Mission Creek Regional Park Wednesday morning. They’re hoping their clean up will also encourage other residents to start some spring cleaning at a local park, roadway, neighborhood, school or at work. The 20 Minute Make Over event is the kick off of Community Clean-up month.

“Over the years, literally thousands of people have participated in 20 Minute Make Over and Community Clean-up Month, from school groups to service organizations, church groups, families, co-workers, and friends,” says Rae Stewart, Waste Reduction Facilitator.

Stewart says throughout the month of April, the Regional District Waste Reduction Office will supply groups with bags and gloves for a clean-up and arrange to pick up the litter collected.

“These events are a great way to bring the community together to make a positive difference and make an impact,” says Stewart. “You know what they say, many hands make light work. We really want to showcase how easy it is for anyone, anywhere to get involved.”

Stewart adds Wednesday’s clean-up crew consists of teen hockey teams and their coaches as well as members of the Central Okanagan Naturalists Club, Friends of the South Slops and various walking groups that frequent the park on a regular basis.

“Mission Creek Park is one of the many jewels of our regional parks network,” says Stewart. “Because it’s in the heart of the city, it’s also one of the most well-travelled parks and highly visible. The last thing we want to see is a bunch of litter tarnishing its natural beauty.”
