HALIFAX – Cleanup continued Monday at schools in Halifax following a major snowstorm last week that left cancelled classes for a fifth time in less than two months.
The Halifax Regional School Board notified parents Sunday night that schools would be closed again as snow-clearing efforts continued.
The news, which came at the end of the March break, came as a shock to some parents.
“Can’t say I was happy to have them home for an extra day, but I can understand the need to have the grounds cleared and safe for students,” said Anita Hovey. “I’m OK with the decision.”
The school board says it has been inspecting schools across the city to make sure facilities are safe for students and staff.
As the number of snow days continues to accumulate, some parents are beginning to wonder if the time off will have a lasting effect.
“How much of an impact does this all have?” asked Duncan Wetzel. “How many missed days do you need before it impacts the curriculum?”
The school closures, while inconvenient for parents, was good news for students who were more than happy to have an extra day off.
“I was pretty bummed to go back to school,” said Rowan Norrad, 11. “You have to… sit in a desk all day and learn. But now I can come and play basketball at the Canada Games Centre, so that’s fun.”
The Halifax Regional School Board announced Monday afternoon that Colonel John Stuart Elementary in Cole Harbour will be closed on Tuesday due to excessive snow on the roof. All other schools are expected to be open.
