Train carrying potash derails near Wetaskiwin

WATCH ABOVE: The Transportation Safety Board is investigating after 20 rail cars derailed east of Wetaskiwin Sunday morning. 

EDMONTON — The Transportation Safety Board has been called in to investigate a train derailment near Wetaskiwin.

Twenty CP Rail cars carrying potash came off the tracks just northeast of the city, near Range Road 235 and Highway 13. It happened around 9:10 a.m. Sunday.

Wetaskiwin Fire Chief Leigh Sawicki says some of the potash spilled out of the cars, but adds it is not hazardous and there are no environmental concerns. Potash is a common ingredient in fertilizer.

“Safety is the priority and we take these incidents seriously,” said CP spokesperson Jeremy Berry.

“CP’s emergency protocols were immediately enacted and all safety precautions and measures were taken as our crews, in close coordination with local officials, responded to the incident.”

No one was injured in the derailment.

Two Transportation Safety Board investigators were called to investigate.

Wetaskiwin is located about 70 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
