RCMP are investigating the death of an 18-year-old skier on Blackcomb Mountain Saturday.
Friends and family have now identified the victim as Cole Anderson from Campbell River.
Around 3 p.m. on Saturday, ski patrol members were notified of an injured skier in the Crystal Zone of Blackcomb Mountain.
They arrived to find the skier unconscious and unresponsive. Efforts to revive him were not successful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Whistler Blackcomb Director of Operations Doug MacFarlane told Global News the victim was freeskiing with a group when he skied off a cliff.
MacFarlane says the man was skiing on a black diamond run, just left of the designated path, and ended up going past a marked cliff area.
It appears he could not stop in time and ended up going over.
“Skiing comes with inherent risks and dangers,” says MacFarlane. “We put all that signage in for your benefit. It is for you to make good decisions up there, so when you see those cliff signs, beware of them. You don’t go and recreate in that area. It’s a warning to get back and stay within the marked runs.”
