WINNIPEG — The University of Winnipeg released new sexual misconduct protocol on Wednesday. Students at the university will now have access to a 24/7 response team if they have been a victim of sexual assault.
“It’s important because sexual assault happens 24/7 it could happen at any point in a student’s day,” said vice president of student services Allison Reimer. “There needs to be someone that student or faculty can call.”
Students helped faculty contribute to the new protocol. Despite existing campaigns in place, there is still offensive behavior happening on campus.
“I’ve walked past students making lewd comments or groping people, it’s not something you see everyday but it’s enough to shock you,”said Reimer.
Another major change is that starting in September, first year students living in residence and participating in orientation week will receive mandatory education on sexual misconduct and consent.
“We’re looking at the yes means yes campaign and talking to students about the fact that they need to get an affirmative yes for any sexual activity,” said Jan Byrd, Executive Director of Wellness and Student Life.
The team at U of W said that ongoing education is important to create a safe environment for students on campus.
