March madness: weather springs wild swings in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG — What a difference a year makes.

On March 17, 2014, Winnipeggers were shovelling snow and brushing off their windshields, but none of that is happening now.

The sudden and early start to spring has melted nearly all of the snow in the city.

By March 17 last year, 151 centimetres of snow had fallen through the winter. So far this season only 64 centimetres have hit the ground.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It’s not the first time Winnipeggers have faced wildly different weather on two subsequent March 17ths. Global News fans might remember a series of photos of Greg MacKay’s bare feet in his backyard sent in by Pam Petznik, his girlfriend.

Greg MacKay takes a photo of his feet in his backyard at this time every year since 2012 hit a balmy 19.2 C on March 17. In 2013, the temperature plunged to -27.8 C; in 2014, he had feet of snow to deal with. This year it was a chilly 3.1 C but the snow was gone. Submitted by Greg MacKay / Global News

In 2012, MacKay was enjoying the unseasonable 19.2 C weather on March 17; in 2013, his bare feet were in danger of freezing in the unseasonable -27.8 C on March 17; the copious snow buried his feet on March 17, 2014.

This year he took two photos a day early. While yesterday’s high was a chilly 3.1 C, the grass is perhaps even greener than it was on the warm spring day that started the tradition.
