Ski lifts close, tennis courts open as Calgarians enjoy unusually warm March

CALGARY- Buckle up the bindings or grab a racquet. That’s the choice some Calgarians are facing this weekend in the wake of surprisingly warm temperatures for mid-March.

“This stretch is hugely unusual,” said Global News meteorologist Jordan Witzel. “We have been at least ten degrees if not into the fifteen degree mark above where we should be each day for March. It really just caps off what has been an unusual winter.”

Tennis players have ventured out throughout the week, as more than 40 city courts opened up – more are expected to open this weekend.

“Usually we are still playing hockey—actually our guys are closing hockey rinks as we are trying to open tennis courts,” said City Parks Department spokesperson Justin Brown. “That’s new to us, for sure.”

Golf courses like Fox Hollow have been open all week, before the official opening of the season.

“Right now everybody knows it’s two to three weeks before we get on real grass,” said Fox Hollow Golf Pro Greg Griffith. “So they are coming out, getting out there in droves. It’s great.”

Fox Hollow says its first open tee time is Saturday afternoon—with slots filling up fast.

Even though summer activities are overshadowing winter ones, there are still some opportunities left to enjoy what snow remains. One lift will be running this weekend at Canada Olympic Park, where some artificial snow still dusts the ground. Cross country trails will be closing on Saturday.
