A volunteer firefighter has died after suffering a cardiac arrest while battling a blaze near Cultus Lake earlier this week.
57-year-old Brian Smyth, a seven-year member of the Columbia Valley Volunteer Fire Department, passed away after two days on life support.
“We lost a member of the family. He kept us all close to the heart, like family,” said said Michael Soth, Chief of the Columbia Valley Fire Department.
“He was a very giving person and it was very important for him to give back to the community,”
Smyth fell ill Wednesday while assisting with a fire that gutted a house on Iverson Rd. It took fire crews at least four hours to knock down the blaze. A 91-year-old woman escaped the building without injury.
The district says he continues to give back in death, as he donated his organs to save the lives of others. A full Line of Duty funeral for Smyth is being planned.
