Second warmest winter on record in 120 years

Balmy temperatures across the south coast have made this winter one of the warmest on record. While winter officially runs Dec. 21 – March 21, “meteorological winter” runs Dec. 1 – Feb. 28 so we can now measure how winter stands up, statistically. Combining the months of December, January and February the average temperature was 6.1 degrees and our average maximum was 9.0 degrees. Making this winter the second warmest on record in 120 years for Vancouver (YVR). As for precipitation the average rainfall is 434.9 mm, this winter had 437.0 mm.

As for the month of February alone we tied our old record  for average monthly temperature from 1958 at 7.6 degrees. However, we still managed to squeak by and set a new maximum temperature record for this month as we topped out at 10.5 degrees just a degree above the old record from 1977 at 10.4. This month we had 113.4 mm of rain which was above the average of 104.6 mm. Keep in mind that the precipitation fell in the first half of February with a series of sub-tropical pineapple express type systems and the last half of February was almost completely dry.
