VERNON – North Okanagan RCMP are investigating after a driver allegedly took off this morning when an officer tried to stop a vehicle. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says after 3:30 a.m. an officer tried to pull over a vehicle in Vernon that was believed to be “making deliberate lane changes.”

“It looked like he was making deliberate lane changes to see what the reaction of the officer was going to be and because of the time of day the officer said ‘this appears suspicious’ so actively went into check him,” says Molendyk.

However, according to police, instead of stopping the driver quickly drove away and police did not give chase.

“That is up to the officers,” says Molendyk. “People could be walking back and forth going to and from work at that hour. Our officers felt it wasn’t safe and so did not initiate a pursuit.”
