Toronto police tweet about wandering toddler draws criticism

TORONTO – Soon after a toddler was found wandering outside Friday, the Toronto Police were criticized Friday after a tweet made a questionable reference to the Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day.

The tweet, sent at 2:48 p.m. by the official Toronto Police account, said “Groundhog Day??? Toddler found by neighbour, outside, near Kipling/Lakeshore.”

The movie, which takes place on Groundhog Day, features Bill Murray stuck in a universe where the day repeats dozens of times.

This case of a wandering, unsupervised toddler on a very cold day,  comes just one day after Elijah Marsh, a 3-year-old boy, was found in a back yard near his relative’s home on Neptune Drive. He had been out in the intense cold for hours.  Paramedics took Elijah to hospital with life-threatening injuries where the boy later died.

Victor Kwong, the police constable who sent the tweet, apologized to anyone who took offense during an interview with Global News.

“I didn’t see it that way. But you know if anyone takes offense to it, I apologize,” he said. “If someone takes offense to it, I’ll delete it.”

The tweet was deleted.

Twitter users reacted swiftly calling expressing disdain and disbelief over what many are calling an inappropriate reference.
