Irish Embassy holds fundraising event for train accident victim

MONTREAL — Supporters crammed the Irish Embassy pub on Wednesday to raise money for a young train accident victim.

Ottawa native Sarah Stott, 22, was hit by a freight train in December. She spent hours waiting for help. Her time in the bitter cold damaged her hands and led to the amputation of several fingers.

Stott also lost both her legs in the accident.

Before that December night, Stott worked at the Irish Embassy pub on Bishop street.

Colleagues and friends served patrons Wednesday, knowing that all proceeds made for the day would go towards supporting Stott’s recovery.

“Even if people can’t give, they can go to the GoFundme site for Sarah and leave a prayer or a message,” Joe Cannon, manager at the Irish Embassy told Global News.

“That way she will know how many lives she’s touched.”

Stott’s close friends knew her story touched many people, but they didn’t expect the crowds of people who showed up Wednesday.

“I’m overwhelmed by how much support people are showing,” Sarah’s friend Carrissa Bass said. “It’s a beautiful thing these people are doing for a beautiful girl.”
