WATCH: Okanagan parents taking advantage of Family Day

It’s the third annual B.C. Family Day and there are tons of activities for parents and kids to enjoy throughout the valley. This is a fairly new holiday meant to give moms and dads a day off to spend with their children — and they’re fully taking advantage of it. Tamora Davy says any extra time to spend with her five-year-old son is precious.

“This means a lot, with work and school not coinciding, this is one of the only few times I can spend with him having a fun day like this,” she says.

Hundreds of families pack the Penticton Community Centre for a fun-filled day, where they have access to the pool and gym, and extra activities such as face painting, hockey tournament and a sizzling BBQ.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We opened our doors at 10 a.m. with huge lineups and we’re filling our buildings with families and lots of great fun things to do,” says Penticton’s Recreation Manager Lori Mullin.

In West Kelowna, kids gear up for a different kind of fun.

The Jim Lind Arena is hosting the Stick N’ Puck N’ Ring event, where young hockey players take turns going on the ice, while their parents look on.

“We spend a lot of time during the week working, and to have a long weekend with just the family is just wonderful,” says Jeff Hickin, dad.

A colourful event is taking place at the Kelowna Art Gallery, where parents and their kids create art work inspired by renowned Canadian artist Emily Carr.

“We feel that we should get the community involved with the art gallery as much as possible. There’s some amazing art work going on right now,” says staff Kelsie Balehowsky.

No matter how Okanagan parents choose to spend this holiday, it is all about families.
