‘SpongeBob’ knocks ‘American Sniper’ out of top spot

TORONTO — The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water soaked up $56 million in its debut weekend to knock American Sniper out of first place.

The movie, which blends animation and live action, had one of the best February openings ever.

American Sniper earned $24 million to rank second. The Clint Eastwood-directed movie starring Bradley Cooper has made $361 million worldwide.

The big budget Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, opened with a disappointing $19 million, according to studio estimates.

Behind it, in fourth place, was the made-in-Vancouver epic Seventh Son. It debuted with only $7 million.

The rest of the top 10 consisted of Paddington ($5.4 million), Project Almanac ($5.3 million), The Imitation Game ($4.7 million), The Wedding Ringer ($4.8 million), Black or White ($4.5 million) and The Boy Next Door ($4.1 million).
